WPL Teams 2023
The tournament will witness its first season in March 2023; the league is owned and operated by the BCCI. The season is scheduled to begin in Mumbai on March 4, 2023, and will continue till March 26, 2023. The tournament will consist of 22 matches. According to the BCCI, in the initial phase of WPL, it will contain five teams, and the number of teams will be increased in the future if the league becomes successful.
The WPL 2023 will also feature players from South Africa, Australia, Thailand, the West Indies, Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, Zimbabwe, England, and New Zealand. According to the statistics, a record amount was spent at the Women’s IPL auction in 2023. The team owners have invested a total of Rs. 59,50,000 in bidding on the top players this year’s auction has to offer.
There were about 87 players on the list that might receive bids. It is mandated that each team might include a maximum of five overseas players, one of whom must belong to an ICC Associate Nation. Therefore, the team’s composition will always be essential in determining its strength. During the auction, each team also purchases backup players.
Rules for the Women’s Premier League in 2023 are as follows:
- There is a cap of 18 players per squad for each team.
- No team may have more than six foreign players on its roster.
- A team may include up to five players from outside the country, with four players allowed to be from Full Member countries and the fifth from an Associate Member country.

The Round Robin, Group System, and Playoff formats will all be used in the WPL 2023. The WPL 2023 Format details are as follows:
- Each of the five competing teams will play the other twice, making a total of 20 league games.

- The second and third-placed teams will face off in the elimination game.
- The victor of the eliminator advances to the WPL 2023 championship game as the second finalist.

Some interesting points about the WPL, 2023
- Investors raised a total of 4,669 crores (US$580 million) to purchase the initial franchise rights in January 2023 through a closed bidding process.
- Viacom18 paid Rs 951 Cr to acquire the media rights to the WPL. Through this agreement, they have the rights for five consecutive years.
- It was reported that star players of Women Cricket team had joined the WPL as team mentors. Mithali Raj has joined as the mentor of the Gujarat Giants team, and Jhulan Goswami has joined as the bowling coach and mentor of the Mumbai Indians Team.
- Smriti Mandhana currently is the most expensive player of WPl, 2023, followed by all-rounder player Deepti Sharma; both bagged a deal of Rs 3.4 crore and Rs 2.6 crore, respectively. Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians both were rooting for Smriti Mandhana.
- It was reported that around 1525 players had registered for the tournament, out of which 409 players were finally selected to play the match.
- In its first season, the WPL will stage a total of 20 league matches and 2 Playoff games that will be played over a duration of 23 days
- The Eliminator of the WPL 2023 will be played at the DY Patil Stadium on March 24. The summit clash of the Women’s Premier League will take place at the Brabourne Stadium on March 26.
- The Women’s T20 Challenge, which began as a single-match event in 2018 and evolved into a three-team, three-match competition in 2019, 2020, and 2022, was the WPL’s forerunner.
It is a great initiative to develop and contribute to women’s cricket progress in India. It should be a must-watch to support the agenda of gender equality.
