According to a statement released by the board on 6th April 2023, the CBSE has changed its evaluation procedures and exam patterns for the academic year 2023–2024. This will be accomplished by including more competency-based questions and reducing the marks-weightage assigned to short and long-response questions in exams. The BSE announced its CBSE New Exam Pattern 2023-2024 to update its assessment scheme for the Class 10 and 12 board exams to be held in 2024 as part of gradually aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommendations.

The board exams are anticipated to be held the following year as a result of the new National Curriculum Framework. Hence the change may only apply to the 2023–24 academic sessions. (NCF). CBSE Old Pattern vs New Pattern
CBSE, or Central Board of Secondary Education, is the national-level body that regulates the curriculum and exam patterns of various private and all central-government-owned schools. The NCERT curriculum is used in schools that are associated with the CBSE, with a focus on the NCERT syllabus from Class 8 to 12. Long and short-answer questions used to be given more weight in the CBSE exam in the past, while MCQ-based questions received less attention. But for CBSE New Exam Pattern, officials claim that the CBSE New Exam Pattern will lead to the addition of more multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and a decrease in the weighting of questions requiring brief or detailed responses. 
CBSE Class 8 MCQs Limit Changed 2023-24
The CBSE press release has not announced much regarding the exam pattern for Class 8th in 2024. But since CBSE Class 8 exam is the roadmap towards upcoming board examinations. Therefore, we can expect that CBSE might increase the percentage of the MCQ-based questions in the exam, but it might not decrease the constructed-answer type questions. In past years CBSE class 10 exam had two sections, Section one for one-word type answer questions and Section 2 for long answer questions. Therefore we assume that CBSE might instruct the schools to increase the number of MCQs in Section One.
CBSE Class 10 MCQs Limit Changed 2023-24
CBSE will increase the weight of the competency-based questions for Classes 9 and 10. These questions made up 30% of the exam for the academic year 2022–2023 in question. In the year 2024, about half of the questions on the Board exams will be MCQs. A test for Class 10 must have 50% competency-based questions. The competency-based questions can be in the form of either multiple-choice questions (MCQs), source-based integrated questions, case-based questions, or any other type. Such questions will be worth 40% of the final grade during the most recent academic term. MCQs with a 20% weighting will now be included in an exam paper’s objective section.

As compared to the last year’s 40% weighting for constructed answer type questions like short-answer and long-answer questions will be decreased to 30%. In 2024, an exam will be taken for the complete syllabus.
CBSE Class 12 MCQs Limit Changed 2023-24
According to the CBSE New Exam Pattern, the weighting of MCQ questions in the Class 12 exam has also altered. This indicates that the candidate’s knowledge of the subject will be given more attention. In class 12, 40% of the questions will be competency-focused. They can be in the form of MCQs, case-based integrated questions, source-based questions, or other types. Such questions carried a 30% weight during the most recent academic session. The objective questions will henceforth invariably be multiple choice questions with a 20% weighting in class 12 as well.

Increasing the objective-based part of the exam has led to a decrease in the subjective-based part of the exam. Therefore, compared to the 50% weighting given to short- and long-answer questions last year, the new pattern has decreased the weightage to 40%.
CBSE Class 10 & 12 Passing Criteria
The CBSE class 10 &12 passing requirements are the same as they were in the past. In both the theory and practical exams, a student must receive 33% of the possible points. To get a passing certificate, students must gain a total number of marks of at least 33% of the total. Further, students are required to score at least 33% in every discipline to be declared a pass. If a student receives 33% overall but less than 33% in one of their disciplines, they must take the compartment test. The final percentage includes the points earned on both theoretical and practical papers.
